Drivers Full-Time and Part-Time

About RATS

  • Rockbridge Area Transportation System (RATS) has been serving the Rockbridge area as a non-profit organization since 1995. 
  • RATS is the only Medicaid-certified transportation organization based in Rockbridge County and the only provider in the region that provides free and reduced rides based on need.
  • Rides are primarily to those going to medical appointments and treatments and those attending adult day programs, but also include other destinations, as well as private pay clients going to the airport and private events. Our private pay clients are an important part of our business model and help us to afford to provide free and reduced rides.


Responsibilities 

  • Offer comfortable and courteous transportation to our Medicaid and private pay clients.
  • Safely and professionally transport individuals with a range of needs and disabilities, including but not limited to those with intellectual disabilities and those in wheelchairs.
  • Follow the route and schedule provided by dispatch.
  • Document rides using an iPad app and back up paper forms as required.
  • Willingness to work some evenings and weekends. All drivers are asked to pitch in driving for special events, which occur on evenings and weekends so that no driver has to work many of those shifts unless they request to.
  • Clean inside and outside of the vehicle used to complete assigned rides.
  • During downtime, complete tasks around the office as needed and which align with employees’ skills and abilities.
  • Attend periodic all-staff meetings, which take place during non-peak driving times (Saturdays or evenings).


Qualifications

  • Virginia drivers’ license in good standing.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Must pass criminal background check with no felony convictions in the past 10 years, national sex offender search, and Virginia child & dependent abuse registry check.
  • Willingness to sign a health attestation form, stating that you possess the physical and mental fitness to perform the duties related to transporting persons.
  • Ability to pass required online and hands-on training, as well as on the job training.
  • Negative results on drug tests.
  • Ability to bend and twist and possess the hand dexterity necessary to secure wheelchair tie downs inside vans.


Compensation

  • Starting pay: $16/hour for the first 90 days.
  • Once new driver's successfully complete classroom and on-the-job training and exit the 90 day probationary period, pay will increase to $17/hour.  Evening and weekend pay is $18.50/hour.
  • Accrual of PTO based on the number of hours worked, regardless of full-time or part-time status.

We cannot hire drivers with felony convictions

Medicaid pays for most of our rides, and the 3rd parties which Medicaid contracts to administer transportation services will not approve drivers with felony convictions within the past 10 years, regardless of the felony type.
